LONG-LIFE OAT ASTM D 3306 SUPER CONCENTRATE

We are proud to launch Brad-Cool SC, a new next-generation 2-EHA-free Long-Life OAT Antifreeze / Engine Coolant Super Concentrate. Automotive Products Manufacturers use super concentrates as an additive package when they make Antifreeze / Coolant concentrates.  However, several manufacturers have ceased production of some of their antifreeze products due to a new restriction on the use of 2-Ethylhexanoic Acid (2-EHA). We have now developed Brad-Cool SC, low treat rate, 2-EHA free alternative super concentrate package.

From 1st December 2023, the EU placed a new restriction on the use of 2-Ethylhexanoic acid and its salts. Specifically, retailers in the EU can no longer chemical products that contain 2-EHA or its salts at >0.3 % for sale to the general public. However, chemical wholesalers can still offer such products for sale, for professional use only. This means that retailers can no longer sell antifreeze / engine coolant concentrates containing >0.3% 2-EHA salts to consumers in the EU market area.

Globally, many automotive antifreeze / coolant manufacturers use 2-EHA salts in their antifreeze concentrates. Moreover, producers of universal antifreeze concentrates tend to rely heavily on this chemical technology. Consequently, several market-leading antifreeze / engine coolants and concentrates can no longer be offered for sale to consumers in the EU. Brad-Cool SC enables manufacturers to produce long-life OAT antifreeze and concentrates for sale to the public and professionals in the EU.

INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS & OEM PERFORMANCE

During our product development we sent antifreeze concentrates made using Brad-Cool SC to independent testing houses. We received excellent passes for all of the test requirements for ASTM D 3306. Additionally, antifreeze made using our new super concentrate meets all of the performance requirements of many other international standards.

In addition to the international standards, Brad-Cool SC also meets the requirements of many original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications. Furthermore, we are continuing our testing, to ensure that this product satisfies the requirements of many more OEM specs.

Based on the external test house results that we have received, we expect that Brad-Cool SC will be suitable for same OEM specs and standards as Brad-Chem 557. However, the new product contains no 2-EHA. Therefore, blenders can supply Brad-Cool SC based coolants to the EU consumer market.

NEW VEHICLE TECHNOLOGIES & DEVELOPMENTS

We will continue to develop new super concentrates for new markets and changing market conditions. We anticipate new challenges due to growing use and diversity of electric vehicle technologies, and regulatory changes. Specifically, we envisage a greater range of cooling options, and increased restrictions on chemicals. For these reasons, we continue our product development, in order to expand and future-proof our product range.

As more automotive manufacturers enter the electric vehicle market, they increase the diversity of new engine specifications. Furthermore, as manufacturers seek to improve performance, they may encounter different heat generation and cooling issues. Unlike in a combustion engine, the Galvanic cells in an electric vehicle generate the energy required to run the vehicle. In fact, some of these Galvanic cells generate a lot of excess heat as a by-product. Correspondingly, in some vehicles the coolant must remove heat energy from the cells as well as removing heat from the motor.

Since Galvalnic cells generate electrical energy, coolants that contact them directly should exhibit lower electrical conductivities. We will continue our R&D efforts, so that we address this challenge. Moreover, regulators prioritize further testing for some of the typical chemical components of antifreeze / coolants. As a result, we expect that some components may incur further restrictions in the future. To this end, we continue to develop new super concentrates to replace products that competitors may discontinue in the future.
