CSR & RESPONSIBLE CARE®
The story of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) standards in the chemical industry starts with Responsible Care®. The International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) acts as steward to Responsible Care®. Petrochemical and Chemical companies voluntarily sign up to the Responsible Care Global Charter, a voluntary ethical framework initiative. Furthermore, many consider Responsible Care® to be the originator of environmental and social governance in these industries. Accordingly, recent published CSR guidance standards share many of their aims with those of Responsible Care®.

Climax Molybdenum’s Fort Madison molybdenum processing plant joined the American Chemical Council in 2017. SUSTAINABILITY & CSR
Presently, the chemical industry prioritizes sustainability and environmental concerns in their CSR programs. Previously, popular culture held the lingering perception of these manufacturers as heavily polluting industries. Undoubtedly, one can point to bygone times in which this was the general case. Moreover, individual extreme examples, such as the 1984 Bhopal disaster, contribute to this perception.
Notwithstanding such egregious breaches, and cultural tropes, there is a very real determination to achieve the best environmental and safety standards and practices. With this purpose in mind, many chemical manufacturers and suppliers now incorporate robust sustainability management programs into all of their processes. Moreover, these businesses extend their demands for sustainability beyond their own companies and throughout their supply chains. Sustainability programs work to minimize carbon emissions, ensure human wellbeing, manage water, minimize waste, and ensure ethical supply chains. Companies reduce their carbon emissions by using alternative energy sources and improving the sustainability of their infrastructure. In these ways, Climax plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35% at their Colorado, Iowa, Rotterdam and Stowmarket sites by 2030.
As part of their water management commitments, Climax completed construction of a US $23,000,000 water treatment facility below their Climax mine site in 2007. Additionally, they continued to update and improve and, in 2014, they opened their $200,000,000 water treatment system. The climax mine has been recognised as a leader in tailings management and stewardship.
Climax also operate an environmental management system, certified to ISO 14001. For this reason, they manage their waste using the hierarchy of waste management. Consequently, they minimize waste by prioritizing waste prevention, reuse and recycling over disposal. Additionally, Climax incorporates its OHSAS 18001 certified health and safety into all of its operations. Furthermore, Freeport-McMoRan assisted the National Mining Association in developing the CORE safety framework and certification system. Climax sites have won numerous awards for health & safety performance, including five consecutive RoSPA gold medals at their UK facility.
Communities
Climax Molybdenum deliver a hugely impressive economic benefit to the communities in the territories where they operate. For example. in 2021, Freeport-McMoRan generated economic benefits of $372 million in economic benefit to the state of Colorado. Those benefits arise from the wages and taxes they pay in the state and the products and services that they purchase there. By the end of 2021, Climax had 680 employees in Colorado, and the effect of Freeport-McMoRan on Colorado created a total of 3,822 jobs.
In this way Freeport-McMoRan and its Climax Molybdenum company contribute much to the sustainability of the communities in which they operate. Furthermore, the Freeport-McMoRan foundation invests in the community, granting awards to projects in the Climax area. Moreover, Freeport-McMoRan provides resources and support of which the funding is only one part.
The awards made though Freeport-McMoRan Foundation Community Investment Fund focus on actions to build resilient in the local communities. To this end, in 2022, they awarded nearly $2.9 million to 41 projects in Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico.
